Ariel didn’t know whether the ship’s descent would take an hour, or a week, or a year. Any of those intervals seemed plausible.

I had my own questions. What kind of ship was coming? How many passengers did it carry? What kind of armaments did it possess? Surely it couldn’t be an assault ship like the Lascaux … and yet, space was big. Floating dark and silent, a kilometer-long titan wasn’t so different from a little pod.

“I am tired,” Clovis said. “I am waiting.” The robot buzzed a long, rattling sigh. “I am resting.”

After an hour, Scrounger returned, and when he heard that the message had been acknowledged, he whooped and set to preparing a feast, producing vials of oil and spice held in secret reserve. Wild greens sizzled in the pan alongside mushrooms he had foraged days prior.

“If we must wait a day, or a week, it will be no bother,” he said. “I waited a year for the opening of the Slow Gates of Shogg. It was worth it. Where do you think I got these boots?” He lifted a heel, heavy with mud.

Clovis slept. Scrounger produced a deck of cards, the same kind that Ariel knew from the tavern in Sauvage. The trash-picker taught him a new game, a simple one, good for passing the time.

In the morning, a star fell from the sky.
